Childstar Wil Wheaton explains that even though he had an ideal lifestyle, he struggled with chronic depression since he was a child. He goes on to explain how his struggle with anxiety and panic attacks turned into obsessive behaviors and suicidal thoughts. He realizes the stigma that comes with chronic depression, that he has been given the idea as if it is something to be ashamed of. However, Wheaton states, “And I’m not ashamed to stand here, in front of six hundred people in this room, and millions more online, and proudly say that I live with mental illness, and that’s okay. I say “with” because even though my mental illness tries its best, it doesn’t control me, it doesn’t define me, and I refuse to be stigmatized by it”. As Wheaton takes this big step to reduce stigma and use his position of power and fame to increase mental health awareness we are encouraged to do the same.
