  MENTAL HEALTH AMERICA OF SUMMIT COUNTY

AGENCY INFORMATION

 

Established in 1956, Mental Health America of Summit County (MHASC) is a not for profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to promoting mental health, preventing mental disorders and achieving victory over mental illness through advocacy, education, research and service. Our primary goal is to eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness.

 

MHASC provides the following programs:

  • Red Flags – a depression awareness curriculum provided to middle schools in Ohio.  The Red Flags kit provides components for the students, school personnel and parents.      
  • Adolescent Suicide Prevention Program – a two to three  day class offered in Summit County high schools by a licensed teacher providing information regarding the signs of depression, coping techniques and tips on how to seek help for themselves or their friends
  • Provision of a directory of public mental health care providers
  • Referral to private and public mental health care providers in Summit County
  • Adult Recovery Activities – classes and support groups for individuals diagnosed with severe mental illnesses to facilitate the recovery process, and presentations on recovery focused treatment
  • Parent Education, Empowerment, Resources and Supports (PEERS) Project – provides support groups, parent advocates, Skills for Living classes for the children, educational and other support services to families with children with serious emotional and behavioral disorders
  • Presentation of certified continuing education workshops for social workers and counselors
  • Community education outreach program
  • General advocacy services and provision of information to individuals who request assistance with navigation of the mental health care system
  • Teddy Bear Patrol – MHASC distributes teddy bears to local law enforcement agencies, Children’s Hospital and the Summit County Chapter of the Red Cross to give to children who have been involved in a traumatic event.

 

 Major funding sources include the Ohio Department of Mental Health, United Way of Summit County and several local foundations.
