This is a narrative highlighting a period in the life of Katie Morris,
a middle school student, who spirals downward into depression and
begins thinking of suicide. Her friend, Jamal, relates the story of
Katie’s struggle with depression. When Jamal finally recognizes the
symptoms of depression, and seeks help for her, he jeopardizes the
bonds of their friendship. Confused, and sometimes offended by her
behavior as she becomes more and more depressed, he nevertheless stands
by her, eventually saving her life when she is contemplating suicide.
This video is broken into chapters representative of Katie's
progression through the various stages of depression. Red Flags pop-up
as symptoms are being demonstrated. DVD. Running time: 31 minutes.
Everyday Hereos (2005): This
resource was created for school building personnel to accompany the
teacher packet. It is a short summary of how the Red Flags program is implemented. It includes a listing of depression symptoms and demonstrates a sample referral process. DVD. Running time: 10 minutes.
Lights in the Darkness: Appalachian Teens Speak Out About Depression (2002):
A documentary, highlighting interviews with over 50 Appalachian
teenagers on the subject of teen depression and suicide prevention. The
youth discuss approaches many young people use to cope with depression.
The video addresses signs and symptoms of depression, the warning signs
of suicide, the importance of engaging in activities to enhance one's
mental health, and if needed, to seek professional help. VHS. Running time: 41 minutes.
Living With It: Youth Talk About Depression (2001):
This video looks into the lives of three young people representing the
African American, Latino and Caucasian cultural backgrounds who are
living and coping with depression. Signs and symptoms of depression are
reviewed in a manner that is easily understood by all viewers. DVD or VHS. Running time: 20 minutes.
Claire’s Story (1994):
Claire, 13, narrates her own experiences with depression. Using humor,
language and visuals middle-school children can relate to, Claire and
an adult narrator address the facts, fears and fiction of depression.
This video teaches youth and their parents to recognize symptoms, to
understand treatment and learn ways of living with this serious
illness. The video stresses the biological components of depression in
two distinct teaching modules: Part I: The Diagnosis and Symptoms of
Depression, and Parts II and II: Treatment, and Living with
Depression. DVD or VHS. Running time: 48 minutes.
